Forever Home Series: A Weekend of Clarity, Confidence, and So Many Yeses

A Weekend of Decisions (That Didn’t Feel Overwhelming)

This weekend felt like a turning point.

After months of dreaming, saving, pinning, second-guessing, refining, and re-refining… we finally spent the weekend with our builder and his lovely wife selecting all of the major materials for our home. And I have to say—what I expected to feel overwhelming and chaotic ended up feeling calm, clear, and honestly… really fun.

I don’t think that happens by accident.

Going In Prepared Changed Everything

I walked into this weekend with a very clear vision.

Not in a rigid, “it has to be exactly this” kind of way—but in a grounded, confident understanding of the feeling I wanted our home to have. Light. Warm. Airy. Layered. Intentional.

Over the past few months, I’ve spent so much time fine-tuning that vision—saving inspiration, building mood boards, asking questions, adjusting, and learning what I actually love versus what just looks pretty in someone else’s home.

And truthfully… having that clarity took away all of the stress.

Instead of feeling overwhelmed by endless options, I felt decisive. Things either fit the vision… or they didn’t. And when they did, I knew it almost instantly.

Working Together (Without the Stress)

I definitely took the lead on interior finishes—Shaun would be the first to tell you that—but what meant the most to me was that we made every decision together.

I never wanted this to feel like “my house.”

So at every step, I checked in. We talked through it. We made sure it felt right for both of us.

And honestly? He rolled with me in the best way. Easygoing, supportive, and fully on board—which made the entire experience even more fun.

The “That Was Fast” Moments

There were a few moments that genuinely surprised me.

The biggest one? Countertops.

I had prepared myself to go back and forth on slabs, overanalyze every option, and leave undecided.

Instead… we found it so quickly.

We landed on Tuscany Quartz from Indigo Surfaces, and I am completely obsessed. It has that soft, warm movement I’ve been chasing—nothing too busy, nothing too stark. Just enough texture to feel elevated while still letting everything else breathe.

And then the pendants… oh my goodness.

Seeing them in person—knowing they were going in our kitchen—tied everything together in a way that made it all feel real. They’re such a statement, but still fit perfectly within the soft, organic feel we’re creating.

Bringing the Vision to Life (Our Selections)

This is where it all started to feel cohesive—like every decision was quietly supporting the next.

For the kitchen and main spaces, we created a layered look that feels warm but still light:

  • Upper cabinets: Maple in Crème (matte)

  • Lower cabinets + bathrooms: Rift White Oak in Veil (satin)

  • Pantry + mudroom: Maple in Sand (matte)

That mix of soft cream and natural wood tones is exactly the balance I had hoped for—nothing too flat, nothing too heavy.

For flooring, we chose Legends Collection LVP in “Laguna Sand” (9x60), which grounds everything with a subtle warmth that runs throughout the home—including the bathrooms for a seamless feel.

The fireplace was another moment I just knew.

We chose the TRA 6x24 Philadelphia Panel stone, and it’s going to be such a beautiful focal point—textural, timeless, and perfectly in line with the organic coastal feel we’ve been building toward.

For the bathrooms, we kept things simple and cohesive with an organic-leaning shower floor tile (F&D), something that feels natural underfoot and blends rather than competes.

And while we’re still finalizing the backsplash, everything we’re considering is being filtered through that same lens: soft, warm, slightly imperfect, and quietly beautiful.

A Little Seattle Magic

We made a whole weekend out of it, which made it even more special.

While the guys handled their side of things, my builder’s wife and I took the opportunity to dress up a little—because why not? If you’re going to Seattle to make big life decisions, you might as well make it fun.

We ended up at the most beautiful oyster bar, followed by a late-night sushi dinner that felt like the perfect way to celebrate such a full and exciting day.

We stayed at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel Seattle, and it was everything you’d want at the end of a long day—quiet, cozy, and just a little bit luxurious.

I slept like a baby.

And the next morning, I found myself in the hot tub with my book, completely at peace, not wanting to rush into anything. I’ve been reading Theo of Golden, and I can’t put it down—it felt like the perfect slow start after such an exciting day.

Gratitude for the Process

Driving home, I kept thinking about how grateful I am for this process.

Not just for the house—but for how it’s come together.

I truly don’t know what I would have done without the ability to work through ideas, refine my style, and stay grounded in our budget every step of the way. Having a space to think out loud, ask questions, and adjust along the way made all the difference in how confident I felt walking into this weekend.

And now… it finally feels real.

What’s Next

Next up: plumbing fixtures—faucets, sinks, shower heads, all the finishing touches that will bring even more personality into the space.

But after this weekend, I feel completely confident going into it.

If this experience taught me anything, it’s that preparation doesn’t take the fun out of the process—it creates the fun. It gives you the freedom to enjoy it, to be present in it, and to trust your decisions.

And that’s exactly what this weekend was.
