Slinging Mud → Subfloors → The Beginning of “Home”

This week feels like a real turning point.

We have our County inspection scheduled for tomorrow morning, and assuming we get the green light (which we’re expecting!), they’ll start installing subfloors tomorrow as well. It’s one of those milestones that doesn’t sound flashy, but when you see it in person… it changes everything. For the first time, you’ll be able to actually stand where your home will be. Walk the rooms. Feel the layout. It all starts to click.

It’s no longer just dirt and plans—it’s becoming something tangible.

What Comes Next

For those following along (or planning your own build), here’s where we head from here:

  • Subfloor installation wraps up

  • Framing begins (walls go up—this is the exciting one)

  • Roof structure + sheathing

  • Windows and exterior doors

  • House wrap + getting “dried in”

Once we hit that dried-in stage, everything starts moving indoors—plumbing, electrical, HVAC—and the house really begins to take shape fast. From everything I’ve heard, this next stretch is where it goes from “construction site” to “oh wow, this is our home.”

Breaking in the Garage (Properly)

This past weekend, we did something that felt equally important in its own way—we had our first little gathering out there.

We built a fire, had some friends over, and officially broke in the garage with a few rounds of cornhole. It was simple, a little scrappy, and honestly perfect. There’s something really special about being out there before the house even exists yet—just land, people, laughter, and a glimpse of what’s to come.

I have a feeling that will be the first of many nights like that.

And I cannot wait to live up there full time.

Seattle Selections (Send Help)

This week we’re heading to Seattle with our builder and his wife to start selecting all the main materials.

I’m equal parts excited and… slightly overwhelmed.

There are so many decisions in a short amount of time, but I keep reminding myself that I’ve been quietly building a vision for this house for a long time now. The “coastal organic, light and airy but warm” direction we’ve talked about over and over—it’s there. I just need to trust it.

If anything, this trip is about bringing that vision to life in a cohesive way.

(And maybe not second-guessing every single tile along the way.)

A Huge Thank You

We also owe a big thank you to Ashley Construction for all of the dirt work that got us to this point. It’s easy to focus on the pretty parts of a build, but none of this happens without the groundwork—literally.

They’ve done an incredible job preparing the site and setting us up for everything that’s happening now.

On Privacy + Creating Our Space

One thing that’s been on my heart lately is how important privacy is to me, especially as we build out here. We chose this location for the space, the quiet, and the ability to feel tucked away a bit from the world.

We’re so excited for friendships, gatherings, and being part of the community—but also really value having our home be our own private space. I think both can exist, and I’m hopeful that’s exactly what we’ll create out here.

Right Here, Right Now

There’s something really sweet about this stage.

It’s not finished. It’s not polished. It’s muddy and busy and a little chaotic—but it’s full of momentum. Every week brings something new, something visible, something that makes it all feel more real.

Right now, we’re about to step onto subfloors…
and next comes walls.

And after that—home.
